We all struggle with questions that we are too sheepish to ask, especially when it comes to health. Sometimes it’s due to embarrassment, other times it’s because we don’t want to offend. It’s true there are questions that shouldn’t be asked. However, that doesn’t make them any less interesting. One question I’ve kept off the tip of my tongue and in the back of my mind is how blind people know when they’re done wiping.

A YouTuber who has been blind since birth, Tommy Edison, has devoted his channel to answering some of the most common questions people ask about being blind. His latest video focuses on a question that he says he gets asked more than any other: how does he know when to stop wiping? Edison expertly and hilariously compares wiping his derriere to wiping anything else, including a smudge on his face or a spill. Although he says he does use a little extra toilet paper to be safe.

Blindness, whether a visual impairment or full legal blindness, is an everyday struggle for more than 3.4 million Americans over the age of 40. People suffering with blindness or vision problems face a higher risk for social isolation, family stress, trouble sleeping, premature death, and other chronic health conditions. In spite of potential cures that are on the horizon, research has shown that vision loss caused by medical conditions such as diabetes and Parkinson’s are expected to surge in the next four decades due to better treatment and survival rates.
