Liliana Baza, Almost 6 Years Old, Receives Birthday Cards From Afar After Cancer Goes Into Remission
For birthdays, 6-year-old kids wish for a lot on their special day -- school friends, candy, cake, and toys. But for Lilian Baza, who turns 6 on Aug. 23, all she wants is birthday cards, and considering that her cancer has just gone into remission, she’s receiving them by the boxful.
Liliana Baza was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Feb. 2012. The cancer affects the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue within bones. The cancer quickly progresses and, as a result, white blood cells never fully mature. It’s the most common type of cancer in children.
After Liliana's leukemia went into remission, her mother, Marie Baza, wanted to do something special for her. Baza, 28, had bought a subscription to Lego magazine for her son, and Liliana was jealous that he always had something in the mail to look forward to.
“She was like, ‘Mommy, Mommy, I want to check the mail, I want to check the mail,” Baza told Good Morning America. “I thought if I could get somebody to send her mail, that would be the greatest thing in the world for her.”
So Baza posted a request on her “Prayers for Liliana” Facebook page, asking for a person or two to send a birthday card.
“She loves to receive mail and checks our mail everyday to see if she got anything so it would be awesome if she got lots of love thru the mail,” she wrote.
“It made me extremely happy to see her so happy,” Baza said. “She stays in kind of an angry mood because of everything she’s gone through, so this is really sweet.”
