Premature Baby Loses A Toe At New Mexico Hospital, Mother May Sue
A baby boy’s toe was cut off in a horrifying mistake at the University of New Mexico Hospital, and his mother may sue.
Erica Hogue gave birth to twin baby boys at just 29 weeks through an emergency cesarean section. The boys, Davante and Delante, are now eight months old. Delante was able to go home with his mother, but his twin wasn’t so lucky.
“They told us they couldn’t let him go because he got a stage-three brain bleed,” Hogue told KOB4. “Whatever it was, we would fight beside him. We were going to take our son whatever way he came to us. Because of his condition, doctors warned that Davante may never be able to walk, talk, see, or hear.
The infant already struggled through various medical procedures, including intubation, a tracheotomy, and a g-tube surgery that caused a hole in his heart before the unthinkable happened in December.
“He had an IV placed in his foot and the nurse that was taking care of him was cutting away the tape and cut off his toe,” explained Hogue. “The orthopedic surgeon came up and stitched all the way around his toe and placed him in a leg cast.”
Despite the surgeon’s efforts, circulation to the toe could not be restored and it was lost. Hogue said she’s angry that something like this could happen, and wants more than an apology.
“For me, that is just not enough. I believe my baby boy is worth so much more than that.”
